The
viability factor
Can
you use the baby’s ability live outside of the womb (viability)
as a measure of when a baby is human? No way! To do so is
completely illogical. Fifty years ago viability was at 30
weeks. Twenty-five years ago it dropped to 25 weeks. Today
we have preemie survivors at 20 weeks. It’s not that moms
or babies have changed, but that there is a tremendous increase
in the sophistication of external life support systems around
the baby, better neonatal care units, and highly skilled doctors
and nurses.
